What final blessing is recited on filled pastries with meat or potatoes?
Question
Hello, esteemed Rabbi, I am struggling to understand what final blessing should be recited regarding filled pastries (with meat or potatoes). Thank you.
Answer
Hello, dear questioner,
If you ate a k'zayit (27 grams) of the dough within the time frame of a pras (approximately seven and a half minutes), you should recite the blessing of "Al Hamichya" only. If not, if you ate a k'zayit of the filling within the time period of a pras, you should say the blessing "Borei Nefashot." If you did not eat a k'zayit from either the dough or the filling within the time frame of a pras, you do not recite any final blessing at all.
Sources: The ruling that if you did not eat a k'zayit from the dough within the pras time but ate a k'zayit from the filling within the same time frame, you should recite "Borei Nefashot," is based on what is mentioned in Responsa "Yabi'a Omer" Vol. 7 (Orach Chaim 32) which states that if one ate from the primary food less than a shiur and the secondary food shiur, one should recite a final blessing on the secondary food.
It is noted that the time frame of a pras is about seven and a half minutes, as stated in the book "Hilchot Olam" Vol. 2 (page 187), and that for matters that are biblical in nature, it is good to be strict and eat a k'zayit within four minutes.
Best regards,
Hillel Meirs
