How Much Bread Do I Need to Eat to Be Obligated to Say Birkat HaMazon?

AA

Question

I know that one says Birkat HaMazon when eating bread. If I eat a small amount of bread, what should I bless? How much is considered a little? What is the threshold?
Thank you.

Answer

Shavua tov,

If you have eaten a kezayit of bread, which is 27 grams or more, you need to say Birkat Hamazon (see Shulchan Aruch, Orach Chaim 167:6, and Yalkut Yosef there, 18).

Ideally, one should eat this amount within four minutes, and after the fact, even if you ate it within seven and a half minutes, you should say Birkat HaMazon (see Responsa Yechave Da'at 1:17).

Best wishes,

Hillel Meirs
