How Many Candles to Light on Shabbat

AA

Question

Dear Rabbi, Shabbat Shalom. How many candles do we light? I was told that we light candles according to the number of people in the family. Is that correct? And what is the precise blessing we need to recite? Shabbat Shalom.

Answer

Shalom u’vracha

It is mandatory to light one candle.

Those who are particular light two candles - one representing 'Zachor' (Remember) and one for 'Shamor' (Observe).

Some light a candle for each family member.

The precise blessing is: Baruch Atah Hashem, Elokeinu Melech Ha’olam, Asher Kid’shanu Bemitzvotav Vatzivanu Lehadlik Ner Shel Shabbat.

Ashkenazim recite the blessing after lighting.

Sefardim recite the blessing before lighting.

With blessings, - Benjamin Shmueli
