Are there mermaids according to Judaism?
Question
Are there mermaids according to Judaism? And what do they look like? Thank you very much
Answer
Greetings,
There are several sources indicating that at least in the past, there existed a creature that is half human and half fish -
See Rashi in Tractate Bekhorot (8a), who explains the words of the Gemara there “children of the sea”; there are fish in the sea that are half human in form and half fish.
Additionally, we find in the Torah Kohanim (3:7) a creature, this is a sea animal. The soul, to bring the sirena. And the Ra'avad wrote in his commentary there, that it is a fish that is half and above resembles a woman and sings like a human.
Also, in the book Tzel HaOlam (Part 2, Gate 10), it is written that there are fish in the land of India that have bodies, etc., resembling a virgin and sing melodiously and are called "Shirena."
Thus the Chida zt"l brings in his book Midbar Kedemot (Section 4, Letter 13) from the book Tzemach Tzadik (Chapter 17) of a fish in the sea called Sirina, which is half and above resembles a virgin woman and half and below takes the form of a fish, and its dwelling place is in rocky and dangerous places in the sea. Whenever a ship passes, it begins to sing and chant in a beautiful voice to the extent that it casts a spell of sleep upon all the crew of the ship, and then enters into it and kills all its inhabitants.
He further cited what was written in the Mitzvah Aroch (entry sireni) about what was mentioned in the Torah Kohanim regarding a fish named Sireni, indicating that it refers to a type of sea animal which is half and below a woman and half and above a man, and in his time, a nobleman and sailors saw it in the sea of Norway sitting on a sandbank as bright as day, and upon hearing its voice, they immediately fell into the sea.
