Choosing a Name for Daughters
Question
I, with Hashem's help, am about to give birth to a daughter and wanted to know if there is an issue with some of the names I love.
Shai - a name that both my husband and I agree upon, which is extremely rare.
Bari - I know this name is also used for boys; is that a problem since today almost anything goes.
Additionally, the names Kedan and Oneg. I really love Oneg, as in Kabbalah it means Eden, river, and garden, and I love its meaning and sound.
Also the name Eliyana (this is after five boys) and the name Ahavah.
Thank you

Answer
Hello,
Shai and Bari are boys' names, and they should not be used for girls (according to the responsa of Rabbi Dvar Malchiel, part 3, end of section 75).
The names Kedan and Oneg are also not recommended.
Regarding the names Eliyana and Ahavah, it is permissible to use them, but there are better and more successful names available.
