When Replacing a Kosher Mezuzah with a Mehudar One, Should One Recite a Blessing?
Question
Hello to the esteemed Rabbi,
When wanting to replace an existing mezuzah with a mehudar mezuzah, should one recite a blessing again on affixing the mezuzah?
Thank you very much.
Answer
Greetings,
One should indeed recite a blessing again upon affixing the mehudar mezuzah.
Sources: It is known that the Maharshal in part 1 (Yoreh De'ah 57) holds that one should not recite the blessing again. However, many maintain that a blessing should be recited, see Rabbi Shlomo Kluger zt"l in his writings Responsa Tov Ta'am Vada'at, earlier edition (457) and Responsa Kana'at Soferim (41), as well as in Responsa Maharam Schick part Yoreh De'ah (285) and in Shedei Chemed (System M, letter 123) and in Responsa Da'at Sofer part 1 (Yoreh De'ah 101).
The opinion of most of our later authorities is also noteworthy - see Responsa Shevet HaLevi part 1 (148:4) and Responsa Shragai HaMeir part 1 (39) and Responsa Yabi'a Omer part 3 (Yoreh De'ah 17, although he notes there that it is good to pause and have some distraction between the first mezuzah and the new one) and Responsa Mishneh Halachot part 7 (kaf, 22) and part 10 (kof, 100) and Responsa Teshuvot V'Hanhagot part 2 (end of 169) and Responsa Avnei Yeshef part 1 (raz, section 1) and Responsa Sha'arei Yosher part 4 (118) and Responsa V'Darshani Chakirta part 2 (52). Likewise, Rabbi Chaim Kanievsky shlit"a responded - as mentioned in the book Dole V'Mashke (page 47).
And also see in Responsa Har Tzvi part Yoreh De'ah (246) and Responsa Minchat David part 1 (134) and Responsa Shevet HaKehati part 2 (8) and in the book Hilchot Shlomo part 1 (chapter 4 regarding halacha letter 10) and in the book Ashrei HaIsh part Yoreh De'ah part 2 (chapter 63, section 3 and note 4).
Best regards,
