The Dissolution of Vows on Yom Kippur, How?

AA

Question

Hello esteemed Rabbi, I have a question... Several years ago, I made a vow regarding something specific that I would not do anymore... Now I want to do it, so my question is this... Am I allowed to do this thing? Because I know that on Yom Kippur we perform the dissolution of vows, is there any halachic issue if I do the specific thing that I previously made a vow about? I would appreciate your prompt response, thank you in advance.

Answer

Hello and blessings,

Regarding the dissolution of vows on Yom Kippur, we only rely on it in cases of retrospectively. That is to say, when someone has already transgressed the vow mistakenly, only then do we rely on the general dissolution of vows.

However, regarding a specific known vow, one must perform a private dissolution of vows by approaching three Jewish individuals and telling them the vow, and if there is no concern of prohibition regarding the action one vowed against, they may permit the vow to be dissolved through hatarat nedarim (the process of releasing someone from a vow) with charata (regret).

Wishing you success - Menashe Israel
