Is it necessary to take tithes from parsley, cilantro, and mint?

AA

Question

Am I supposed to take tithes from parsley, cilantro, and mint? Thank you very much

Answer

Greetings,

Parsley is obligated in tithes and first fruits because it is eaten with the salad (Chazon Ovadia, Tithes and First Fruits, page 102). The same applies to the leaves of cilantro.

Regarding mint leaves, if you are accustomed to eating them (or mixing them into salad), you should separate tithes and first fruits with a blessing. If you are not accustomed to eating them, and they are only used for fragrance or to flavor tea, you are exempt from tithes and first fruits (Chazon Ovadia, ibid, page 101).

Best regards,

Hillel Meirs
