What Blessing is Recited on a Regular Dough Filled with Cheese or Meat?

AA

Question

Hello Rabbi,
A regular dough that is baked and filled with honey is blessed with the "Mezonot" blessing initially.
What blessing is recited on that dough when it is filled with-
1. Potato
2. Salty cheese
3. Meat
Thank you very much.

Answer

Hello,

In all cases, one should recite "Hamotzi".

Sources: There is a dispute among the poskim, but in practice, we follow the simple understanding of the Shulchan Aruch (Chapter 168, Section 17) that a pastry baked in the oven with meat, fish, or cheese requires the "Hamotzi" blessing and the "Birkat Hamazon" (Grace After Meals), as explained by the Mishna Berura (Section 285) even if no meal was established upon it. This is not similar to "pat habah b'kisnin" (which refers to dough filled with fruits and spices as explained in Section 7) that does not require "Hamotzi" unless a meal was established upon it, because there it is only made as a dessert and for sweetness, which is not the case with a pastry filled with meat, which is made to satisfy hunger and is like other bread and meat when consumed together.

Similarly, it is ruled in the book "Chazon Ovadia" on blessings (Page 67) that a pastry or pastille stuffed with meat, fish, or cheese, and the dough of the fillings is regular dough, baked with them, is not considered "pat habah b'kisnin", and even if one does not establish a meal upon it, one should recite "Hamotzi" and "Birkat Hamazon" on them.

With blessings,

Hillel Meirs
