Why is Garlic and Sugar Distributed at the Redemption of the Firstborn?

AA

Question

Shalom Rabbi, why is garlic and sugar distributed at the redemption of the firstborn? Thank you

Answer

Shalom Rav,

One of the reasons for this custom is to share something from the meal with those who were unable to participate in this very significant meal. Therefore, in order not to burden the one redeeming the firstborn, it was instituted to distribute garlic, which is a sharp food suitable for a meal, and a little amount is sufficient. This way, it can easily accommodate all participants and their families.

Hillel Meirs
