Women

A Woman Entering a Cemetery

AA

Question

Is it permitted for a woman to enter a cemetery for a funeral or a memorial? And is there a difference in this law for a pregnant woman? Thank you.

Answer

Greetings, 1. As a general rule, it is permitted for a woman to enter a cemetery during her menstrual period, although there is a matter to avoid doing so (see Taharat HaBayit, Part 2, Siman 12, Se'if 44). 2. Even those who are stringent not to go to a cemetery do so specifically during the days of menstrual flow, but during the days of seven clean days of the count, leniency is allowed (same source). 3. There is no prohibition for a pregnant woman to enter a cemetery; however, there is a widespread custom among many women to avoid it during their pregnancy (see Shut Minchat Yitzchak, Part 10, Siman 47, Ot 2). In any case, when there is a need, she may enter the cemetery without concern (Chazon Ovadiah, Aveilut, Part 1, page 314; Netivei Gavriel, Aveilut, Part 2, Chapter 145, Se'if 4). Good news, Hillel Meirs
