Is It Permissible to Buy Fruits and Vegetables Abroad Without Certification?
Question
I am abroad and buy fruits and vegetables from a non-kosher supermarket. How can I separate terumot and ma'asrot? Thank you very much.
Answer
Greetings, It is permitted to eat fruits and vegetables abroad without certification, since there is no obligation to separate terumot and ma'asrot there (Shulchan Aruch Yoreh De'ah 296:1; see also Shu"t Yabia Omer, Part 10, Yoreh De'ah 46, and Chazon Ovadia, Terumot U'ma'asrot pages 44-66; and Shu"t Beit Neeman, Part 1, Yoreh De'ah 9-11). Furthermore, there is no concern that these fruits might be prohibited due to orlah, since according to halacha, a doubtful case of orlah outside of Israel is permitted (Shulchan Aruch ibid. 295:9).
