Is There a Concern About Tearing Pictures of People?

Hello esteemed Rabbi, nowadays it is common to receive photos at events such as magnets and so forth. Is it permissible to throw them away or tear them? Some claim that this brings bad luck to the person pictured. Is this so? Thank you very much.
