Blessing Shehecheyanu on a New Tallit

AA

Question

I purchased a "large tallit." Do I need to recite the Shehecheyanu blessing on it? I wore it once for about a minute to check the size, and I wonder, for example, when I wear it for an extended period, will I need to say Shehecheyanu? Thank you very much.

Answer

Greetings, If you feel joy from the new tallit, you should recite the Shehecheyanu blessing the first time you wrap yourself in it for the sake of the mitzvah (see Shulchan Aruch Orach Chaim 22). Even though you previously wrapped yourself in the tallit, you may still recite Shehecheyanu, since that prior wrapping was not for the sake of the mitzvah (see Biur Halacha there, s.v. "b'sha'at," and the Mishnah Berurah, paragraph 7). With blessings, Hillel Meirs
