Is Gel Nail Polish Considered a Barrier?
Question
I wanted to ask if applying gel nail polish on the nail that covers the entire nail and does not come off easily is considered a barrier?
Answer
Shalom, Gel nail polish on the nails does not constitute a barrier for the ritual washing of the hands (netilat yadayim), as the Shulchan Aruch writes (Orach Chaim 161:2): "And women who typically paint their hands for adornment and the like, such coloring does not form a barrier." However, this only applies when the gel polish is applied perfectly and without gaps. If it is not completely applied or if you would not normally wear it to an event, it does constitute a barrier for the washing of hands (see Shiurei Shevet HaLevi 137:17 under the heading 'Color,' and Hilchot Olam Part 5 page 160).
