Women
Can a Woman Recite a Blessing Without a Head Covering?
Question
Does a married woman need to wear a head covering while reciting a blessing or eating? If I get up at night to feed the baby or go to the bathroom, do I need to put on a head covering each time and recite a blessing? (I am inside the house without a covering for comfort). Thank you.
Answer
Greetings, The custom is that married women cover their heads when praying or reciting blessings, even when alone in private rooms; however, this is not an absolute halachic requirement (Tefilah kehalachta, Chapter 7, paragraph 31, and note citing Rabbi Shlomo Zalman Auerbach, of blessed memory). Nevertheless, according to the opinion of Rabbi Ovadia Yosef, of blessed memory, women are obligated to cover their heads when reciting a blessing (She'elot u'Teshuvot Yabia Omer, Vol. 6, Orach Chayim, siman 15).
