What should I do if I washed my hands and recited Hamotzi but did not eat enough bread to say Birkat Hamazon?

AA

Question

Shalom, I would like to know what I should say after a meal when I have washed my hands and recited the blessing Hamotzi, but did not eat enough bread to say Birkat Hamazon. Thank you very much.

Answer

Shalom and blessings, dear Erez!

If you have eaten approximately one-third of a regular slice of bread, you are obligated to recite Birkat Hamazon. If you have eaten less than that amount, you do not need to say Birkat Hamazon. However, if you ate other foods such as cheese or vegetables, you should recite the blessing Borei Nefashot over them.

Furthermore, if you know to begin with that you will not eat more than one full slice of bread, you should not recite the blessing on washing your hands (Netilat Yadayim).

With blessings,

Pinchas HaLevi
