Question

Hello, I would like to know if when I affix a mezuzah, am I required to recite the Shehecheyanu blessing? I would appreciate an answer as soon as possible. Thank you very much.

Answer

Greetings, There is no blessing of Shehecheyanu recited upon affixing a mezuzah. However, among the Yemenite community, it was customary to recite it. Sources: The Shach writes in Yoreh De'ah (siman 281 se'if 1) quoting the Pri Ha'aretz that one does not recite Shehecheyanu upon affixing a mezuzah because it is not an occasional event, unlike a talit or garment one wears on which this blessing is recited due to joy. The mezuzah blessing is only recited for the mitzvah of affixing the mezuzah itself, not for the joy that Hashem places it in the home. In Sefer Hilchot Shlomo, part one (chapter 23 note 54), the Gaon Rabbi Shlomo Zalman Auerbach zt"l is cited as instructing a person who has never affixed a mezuzah to recite Shehecheyanu at the time of affixing mezuzot. However, this apparently follows only the opinion of the Rema (Yoreh De'ah 280:2) who holds one should recite Shehecheyanu when fulfilling a mitzvah for the first time in one’s life. The Shach (se'if 1) disagrees and states that one should not recite it. See also the extended discussion in Sefer Taharat HaBayit part two (2019 edition, pages 629-635). Still, it is appropriate to recite Shehecheyanu on a new garment or a new fruit and to intend to fulfill the mitzvah of mezuzah in order to discharge the opinion of the Rema mentioned above, as the Biur Halacha writes (siman 22, d"h kana). That said, it is the Yemenite custom to recite Shehecheyanu when affixing a mezuzah, as recorded by the Maharitc in Shu"t Peulat Tzaddik part two (siman 168), and it appears likewise in Shulchan Aruch HaKatzar part five (siman 127 se'if 12).

Blessings, Hillel Meirs
