Will the pig be kosher in the future?

AA

Question

Will the pig become kosher? And when? Please provide sources. Thank you.

Answer

Greetings,

There are those who say that the pig will be permitted for consumption in the future, in the days of Mashiach. The source for this is found in the novellae of the Ritva (Kiddushin 59b) quoting the Midrash, explaining why it is called "chazir" (like "chozer" to return), as Hashem will return it to Israel in the future.

Commentators such as Rema MiPano in his book Asara Maamarot, Maamar Chakor Din Part 4 Chapter 13, Or HaChaim on Vayikra 11:7, and Ben Yehoyada on Nazir 23a explain that the Torah will not change in the future, but that the pigs born in the future will have two signs of purity: their hooves will be split, and they will chew their cud.

With blessing,

Hillel Meirs
