Is It Permissible to Receive Food That Was in a House of Mourning?

AA

Question

Is it permissible to receive food that was in a house of mourning during the shiva, such as dairy items or cakes? Thank you very much.

Answer

Shalom u'vracha,

For someone who has not been stringent about this, it is permitted to take food from the house of mourning during the shiva. Similarly, it is the custom of Sephardim to distribute blessings during the shiva in the house of the mourners to those offering consolation, and the consoler takes the food and recites the blessing over it without concern. (See Shut Yabia Omer, Choshen Mishpat, siman 35, paragraph 4).

Blessings, Menashe ben Porat
