Is a Blessing Recited Upon Seeing the Sea of Galilee?

AA

Question

Regarding the Sea of Galilee, do we say a blessing upon seeing it?

Thank you very much for all the help!!!

Answer

Hello,

If you have not seen the Sea of Galilee for thirty days, you should recite the blessing "Oseh Ma'aseh Bereshit".

Sources: Chazon Ovadia Berachot (page 297). Also the opinion of Rabbi Nissim Karelitz, Shlit"a, in the book Chut Shani Shabbat Part 3 (page 274). See also in the book Sha'ar Ha'ayin (Chapter 8, Note 20), according to the opinion of Rabbi Yisrael Meir Kagan, Rabbi Chaim Pinchas Sheinberg, Rabbi Yitzhak Fischer, Rabbi Ovadia Yosef, zt"l, and may he live long, Rabbi Moshe Sternbuch. He added that he heard from Rabbi Aharon Leib Steinman, Shlit"a, that when his father, Rabbi Shlomo Zalman Auerbach, zt"l, arrived in Tiberias after thirty days of not being there, he would bless upon seeing the Sea of Galilee with "Oseh Ma'aseh Bereshit" in the name of the King.

Best regards,

Hillel Meirs
