Is it Permissible to Sit on a Chair at Home on Tisha B'Av?

AA

Question

Dear Rabbi,

Is it permissible for a healthy person to sit on a chair at home on Tisha B'Av? Only in the synagogue do we sit on the floor.

Thank you

Answer

Shalom,

At home, one should also refrain from sitting on a chair on Tisha B'Av (see Or L'tziyon part 3, page 271, and Shulchan Aruch in the relevant section).

According to the Sephardic custom, this should be observed until the time of the Minchah prayer (Shulchan Aruch Orach Chaim 559:3). According to Ashkenazic custom, one may sit on a chair immediately after the conclusion of the Shacharit prayer (Rama there).

Blessings,

Hillel Meirs
