The Name Michaela for a Baby Girl

AA

Question

Hello honorable Rabbi, we are looking for a name for our baby girl who, thank God, will be born soon. We understood that the name "Michaela" is not recommended for girls. I wanted to ask honestly why?! After all, there is an added letter "heh" and it is indeed a girl’s name, unlike the name "Daniel" which is used for both genders without any addition. Thank you.

Answer

Shalom, The reason it is not recommended to name a girl Michaela is not because it resembles a boy's name, but because the name has no roots in Judaism and it has not been the custom (see the book Vayikra Shemo B’Yisrael, page Shfa).

Blessings, Hillel Meirs
