Is It Permissible to Eat the Brain of a Beast?

AA

Question

I usually eat the meat of a beast. Is there any problem with eating the brain?

Thank you.

Answer

Greetings, From a legal perspective, it is permissible to eat the brain of a beast, but there is a concern to avoid doing so. As the Ben Ish Chai wrote (second year, Parashat Acharei, section 11), according to the opinion of our teacher the Arizal, eating the brain dulls a person's intellect. Therefore, it is appropriate for males to be particularly careful not to eat it. Likewise, pregnant and nursing women should also exercise caution in this matter (see also the responsa Yabia Omer, part 2, Yoreh Deah section 8, subsection 3, "u'beheyoti," and what is brought in the book "Shmirat HaGuf VeHaNefesh," part 1, section 12, paragraph 4).

Blessings, Hillel Meirs
