The Text of Kiddush on Sukkot Eve for Someone Not Eating in the Sukkah

AA

Question

What is the text of Kiddush on the eve of the festival of Sukkot if I do not have a sukkah to fulfill the mitzvah in? Should one skip the blessing on sitting in the sukkah and recite the Shehechiyanu blessing? Thank you.

Answer

Greetings, Indeed, one should recite Kiddush including the blessing of Shehechiyanu, while omitting the blessing of sitting in the sukkah.

Sources: Since the Shehechiyanu blessing applies not only to the mitzvah of the sukkah but also to the festival itself, as written by the Shulchan Aruch (Orach Chaim 639:1), therefore, even someone who does not eat in a sukkah should recite Shehechiyanu on the festival itself, as also explained by the Rema (Orach Chaim 639).

Happy festival, Hillel Meirs
