Is an Empty Mezuzah Case Subject to Genizah?

AA

Question

Does a special sanctity apply to an empty mezuzah case that was in use? Thank you.

Answer

Greetings, An empty mezuzah case that was previously in use is considered a hechashiv shel kedushah (a holy object designated for mitzvah use) and therefore requires genizah.

Sources: According to the Mishnah Berurah (Orach Chaim 346:14), and likewise in Niddud in the book Genzei HaKodesh (chapter 6, section 21 and note 35) in the name of Rabbi Yosef Shalom Elyashiv of blessed memory, and to a similar effect from the Chazon Ish, Rabbi Nissim Karelitz, shlita.

Blessings, Hillel Meirs
