Is It Permissible to Bring Drinks into the Bathroom?

AA

Question

Hello,

I would like to know if it is permissible to bring drinks into the bathroom?

Thank you.

Answer

Greetings,

Initially, one should be stringent not to bring drinks into the bathroom; however, afterward, the drinks are permitted.

Sources: See in the responsa Yabia Omer, Part 4 (Orach Chaim, Section 5), and in the book Yalkut Yosef (Section 3, Paragraph 23), where it is stated that one should be stringent initially not to bring food and drinks into the bathroom even if they are wrapped and sealed in a closed container. Therefore, one should not conceal closed food containers in the bathroom. Nevertheless, retrospectively, they are permitted even if no significant loss is involved. If one has food in their garment pocket and wishes to enter the bathroom but has no place to set them down, it is permitted to enter with them. Uncovered food brought into the bathroom, such as fruits, should ideally be washed three times; if that is not possible, they are permitted retrospectively. It is a matter of piety not to eat them.

Hillel Meirs
