Is It Permissible for a Pregnant Woman to Wear Gold Jewelry?
Question
Hello, I have heard that it is preferable not to wear gold jewelry during pregnancy. I have several questions:
1. I would like to know the reason for this.
2. Is it acceptable to wear jewelry made of regular metal with only a gold coating (or containing a small percentage of gold)?
3. Does this also apply to a woman who has not experienced a miscarriage? I ask because I am pregnant for the first time, b'ezrat Hashem, after about two years of trying, and I want to take every possible precaution.
Thank you very much!
Answer
Hello, Indeed, Rabbi Nachman of Breslov, of blessed memory, wrote in the book "HaMidot" (entry "Maflet," part two, letter Aleph) that a woman who has experienced miscarriages should not wear gold jewelry. This is also brought in the book "Yeshuot Mordechai" (page 59) in the name of Rabbi Mordechai Eliyahu, of blessed memory, who stated that a woman suffering from miscarriages, when she is pregnant, with the help of Hashem, should remove all gold jewelry. In response to your questions:
1. It seems that the reason for this is not explained.
2. For a woman who suffers from miscarriages, it is recommended to avoid gold jewelry altogether.
3. The guidance applies to a woman who suffers from miscarriages. However, it is generally recommended for every woman to remove gold jewelry upon entering the delivery room, as written in "Yeshuot Mordechai" (page 60), where he advised a woman entering the delivery room to remove all gold jewelry, such as a ring, bracelet, necklace, and so on.
