Havdalah on a Yom Tov That Falls on Motzei Shabbat
Question
1. When Shavuot falls on Motzei Shabbat, what must be done first, Havdalah or Kiddush?
2. How is the Yom Tov candle lit? Thank you very much for your help, esteemed Rabbi!
Answer
Greetings,
1. In the Kiddush for Yom Tov, one includes the Havdalah formula "between holy and holy," and also recites the blessing over the candle, but does not bless over the spices. The order is as follows: the blessing over the wine, the Kiddush for Yom Tov, the blessing over the candle (borei meorei ha'esh), the Havdalah blessing (hamavdil bein kodesh le'kodesh), and the Shehecheyanu blessing (Shulchan Aruch, Orach Chaim 496:1, and Mishnah Berurah 3).
2. When Yom Tov falls on Motzei Shabbat, it is forbidden to light the Yom Tov candles before the stars appear. One must wait until after nightfall, and then the woman says, "Baruch hamavdil bein kodesh le'kodesh," and lights the candles. Since kindling a new flame on Yom Tov is prohibited, it is necessary to prepare before Shabbat a candle that can burn more than twenty-four hours, from which the Yom Tov candles may be lit.
With blessing, Hillel Meirs
