Jewelry with Encoded Tanakh and Bathroom Entry
Halachic Guidelines on Wearing Sacred Text Jewelry in Restrooms
Question
Hello! There is a new company called Talor Jewelry with a piece of jewelry in which the entire Tanakh is encoded. The letters can only be seen through a microscope. Since the letters are exposed and not covered, what is the halacha regarding this? Is it permitted to enter a bathroom while wearing this jewelry?
Answer
Greetings, Even though the script is so small that it can only be read with a microscope, one must not treat it disrespectfully by entering a bathroom while wearing it (see Rabbi Binyamin Aryeh HaKohen Weiss zt"l in Shu"t Even Yikra Part 2, Siman 33). Therefore, it is advisable to refrain from wearing such jewelry out of concern that one might inadvertently enter a bathroom without covering it, thereby causing desecration of the holy writings contained therein (see Shulchan Aruch, Yoreh Deah, Siman 347, Se'if 4, Turei Zahav and Shach there). Blessings, Hillel Meirs
