The Shehecheyanu Blessing in the Kiddush on the Second Night of Rosh Hashanah
Question
Is the Shehecheyanu blessing recited on the second day of Rosh Hashanah, and is it said during Kiddush or over a new fruit that has not yet been eaten? Thank you in advance to those who answer.
Answer
Greetings, Ideally, one should make an effort to have a new fruit set on the table on the second night of Rosh Hashanah, or wear new clothing, and intend in the Shehecheyanu blessing in Kiddush to include this fruit or garment. If one does not have a new fruit or new clothing, one still must recite the Shehecheyanu blessing (see Shulchan Aruch and Rama, Orach Chayim 596, section 2, and Mishnah Berurah there). It should be understood that the primary reason for reciting the Shehecheyanu during Kiddush on the second night of Rosh Hashanah is in honor of the sanctity of the day itself; only secondarily does this exempt one from reciting it over a new fruit (this caution is also emphasized in Chazon Ovadia, Yamim Noraim, page 154, end of note 34). With blessings, Hillel Meirs
