Halachot and Customs

Is Shabbat Chatan Obligatory According to Halacha?

AA

Question

1) Is Shabbat Chatan obligatory according to halacha?

2) My mother cannot host the Shabbat Chatan. Is it possible to hold it at the bride's house or another location?

3) Is it permissible to postpone Shabbat Chatan by one week?

Thank you.

Answer

Greetings and blessings,

There is no obligation for Shabbat Chatan, but it is a proper custom. One should not incur excessive expenses for it, and it is sufficient to hold it at home with a small minyan who will participate in Birkat Hamazon. This is the appropriate way to conduct it in any case. It is not permitted to delay the seven blessings (Sheva Brachot) to the following week, but it is allowed to have a regular celebration at any time. May it be for good fortune – Binyamin Shmueli
