Names - Itamar, Evyatar, and Avigail

Question

Hello esteemed Rabbi,

I tried to find information about the biblical figures Itamar, Evyatar, and Avigail to understand their personalities and lives and to decide if it is appropriate to name a baby boy or girl after one of these names (of course, male names for boys and female names for girls), but I was unable to find any. I would appreciate your help. Good day.

Answer

Peace and blessing,

Avigail, the wife of David, was righteous, and it is a commendable name for a girl.

Itamar, the son of Aharon the Kohen, was righteous, and it is a commendable name for a boy.

Evyatar should not refer to Evyatar the Kohen who was of Eli’s descendants and was cursed. Rather, it should refer to Rabbi Evyatar mentioned in the Talmud, Tractate Gittin 56b. This is also the ruling of the esteemed Rabbi Chaim Kanievsky, that there is no prohibition against naming a boy Evyatar.

Wishing you success - Menashe Yisrael
