Clarifying the Halacha on Opening Umbrellas Inside the Home

Question

Hello honorable Rabbi, Is it permissible to open an umbrella inside a house, or is that considered a superstition?

Thank you.

Answer

Greetings, It is permissible to open an umbrella indoors without any concern.

Sources: Responsa Maaseh Efod, Part 1 (Siman 91). Also see Sefer Segulot Rabbanan (page 224, question 8), where Rabbi Chaim Kanievsky, shlita, was asked if there is any basis for the belief that opening an umbrella indoors delays finding a match. He replied that he had not heard of such a thing. See further notes there citing responsa and the work Derashat Vechikrat, Part 5 (Choshen Mishpat, Siman 8, paragraph 1).
