Ten Remembrances

AA

Question

Hello, Rabbi. I would like to kindly ask if it is possible to receive a detailed listing of the Ten Remembrances. I try to say them every day, but I do not truly understand what I need to remember. I know this is a difficult question and the answer is long, but it is really important that you also publish the answer, because when searching on Google there is not really a thorough detailed explanation. Thank you very much, Rabbi!

Answer

Greetings and blessings.

The Ten Remembrances are as follows:

1. The Exodus from Egypt – to remember the great miracle by which Hashem brought us out of Egypt. Concerning this, the verse says: "So that you may remember the day you went out of the land of Egypt all the days of your life."

2. Remembering the Revelation at Mount Sinai – to recall Hashem's revelation to the people of Israel at Mount Sinai, as it says: "Only be careful and watch yourself closely, lest you forget the things your eyes saw, and they depart from your heart all the days of your life; and you shall make them known to your children and your children’s children — the day you stood before Hashem your God at Horeb."

3. Remembering Amalek's evil and the mitzvah to obliterate him, as stated: "Remember what Amalek did to you on the way as you were coming out of Egypt; how he met you on the way and struck down all the stragglers in your rear, when you were weary and exhausted, and he did not fear God. And it shall be, when Hashem your God grants you rest from all your enemies around you in the land that Hashem your God is giving you as an inheritance, you shall blot out the memory of Amalek from under heaven; do not forget."

4. Remembering the sin of the Golden Calf and the other sins committed in the wilderness, as it says: "Remember and do not forget how you angered Hashem your God in the wilderness from the day you left Egypt until you reached this place, you have been rebellious against Hashem."

5. Remembering the episode of Miriam, who was stricken due to the sin of slander when she spoke against Moshe, the prophet of Hashem, as it says: "Remember what Hashem your God did to Miriam on the way when you came out of Egypt."

6. To remember the commandments of Shabbat at all times, as it says: "Remember the day of Shabbat to sanctify it."

7. To remember Hashem's kindness in granting us strength at all times, as it says: "And you shall remember Hashem your God, for He is the one who gives you strength to perform might, to establish His covenant which He swore to your ancestors, as at this day."

8. To remember the miracles Hashem performed with our forefathers in the wilderness until this day, as it says: "And you shall remember all the way which Hashem your God has led you these forty years in the wilderness, to humble you and test you to know what is in your heart, if you will keep His commandments or not. And He humbled you and let you be hungry, and fed you with manna, which your ancestors did not know… so that man does not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from Hashem's mouth."

9. To remember Hashem's salvation from Balak and Bilaam, as it says: "My people, remember what Balak king of Moab planned, and what Balaam son of Beor answered him from the Shittim to Gilgal, so that you may know the righteousness of Hashem."

10. To remember the destruction of Jerusalem and yearn for the rebuilding of the Temple, as it says: "If I forget you, Jerusalem, may my right hand forget its skill; may my tongue cling to the roof of my mouth, if I do not remember you, if I do not set Jerusalem above my highest joy."

Wishing you success. Binyamin Shmueli
