Can I Use the Oven for Both Dairy and Meat?
Question
Shalom,
I purchased a new oven with only one baking compartment. Can I use it for both dairy and meat? And when I want to bake a pareve pastry, how do I kosher the oven to accommodate all these needs?
Answer
Shalom and blessings,
You cannot use the oven for both meat and dairy without koshering between uses.
The koshering process involves a thorough cleaning and waiting 24 hours between using the meat and dairy, and then turning the oven on to its highest heat for half an hour, after which it can be used for dairy.
Even if the oven is designated as meat or dairy, if you bake a pareve pastry in it, the pastry will not turn into meat or dairy and will remain pareve.
