Haircutting on Chol HaMoed Sukkot

AA

Question

Is it permissible to hold a haircutting ceremony for a child on Chol HaMoed Sukkot?

Thank you very much.

Answer

Greetings,

It is permissible to perform a haircutting (chalakah) for a child on Chol HaMoed Sukkot.

Sources: See Be'er Heitev and Sha'arei Teshuvah (Siman 469:26) quoting Gan HaMelech (Siman 72). Also see the book Chazon Ovadia, Yom Tov (page 173, beginning of the section), and what is brought there in Nitei Gavriel on the matter of shaving children (Chapter 10, Section 6). Indeed, in Kaf HaChaim (Siman 469:30) it is brought in the name of the book Mizbe'ach Adama that the barber should be a poor Jew. However, this seems specifically when one pays for the haircut; if the person cutting the child's hair does so free of charge, then there is no need for the barber to be a poor Jew. The same is stated in Piskei Teshuvot (there, note 6).

Blessings, Hillel Meirs
