Is it not good to eat olives?
Question
Is it not good to eat three olives at any time or only in certain circumstances? Thank you!!
Answer
Greetings, It is explained in Tractate Horayot (13b) that the habitual eating of olives causes one to forget their Torah study. Indeed, the Ben Ish Chai, of blessed memory, in his work Ben Yehoyada there, writes that one is not considered "habitual" in olives unless eating them three times (however, it is unclear whether he means that one who eats two olives at one meal is not considered habitual, or if eating olives twice a month or twice in one’s life does not count). The opinion of Rabbi Chaim Kanievsky, shlit"a, in his book Siach Hasadeh (Memory book, Part B, paragraph 11) is that one is considered habitual in olives if they eat olives once in thirty days, but if one eats olives less often than every thirty days, they are not considered habitual and it does not cause forgetting (see also Igrot Moshe, Yoreh Deah II:8:4). Regarding whether it is beneficial to apply olive oil on olives to prevent forgetting: some say this is helpful, based on the Gemara there which states that the olive causes forgetting for seventy years, and olive oil restores learning for seventy years, so they cancel each other out and cause no harm. This also appears in Shut Shalmat Chaim 41, and similarly in the writings of Rabbi Yitzchak Velaz, of blessed memory, at the end of Sefer Shmirat Hanefesh. Also, in Sefer Hilchot Shlomo, Part I, chapter 2, footnote 103, it is brought in the name of Rabbi Shlomo Zalman Auerbach, of blessed memory, that this is effective, and thus it has been the custom in Jerusalem from ancient times. Similarly, in Sefer Shulchan Yosef (page 128, paragraph 133) quoting Rabbi Ovadia Yosef, of blessed memory, it is learned that mixing olives with oil is proper to protect from forgetting. See also Shut Mishneh Halachot 19:115 and Sefer Netey Gavriel Purim 8:8. However, Rabbi Chaim Kanievsky, shlit"a, in Siach Hasadeh writes that this is not effective. In any case, even one who is habitual in eating olives does not transgress the prohibition of forgetting Torah words, as explained in Sefer Chassidim (paragraph 848). See also Igrot Moshe II:8 and IX:68:7.
Blessings, Hillel Meirs
