Blessing the Chanukah Candle Lighting and Responding Amen with a Tune

AA

Question

Is there a problem with reciting the blessing over lighting the Chanukah candles and responding amen to a tune? Thank you very much.

Answer

Greetings, It is permitted to recite the blessing and respond amen with a melody; however, one must be careful not to double words or letters to fit the tune. Additionally, one must avoid altering the natural cantillation of the phrases, such as reversing the accents, and not to prolong any word excessively to the point that its meaning is lost. Certainly, one should not breathe in the middle of a word causing it to be split into two parts (see Shut Yabia Omer, part 6, Orach Chayim section 7).

Blessings, Hillel Meirs
