Is it Permitted to Work on Tisha B'Av?

AA

Question

Shalom Rabbi,

Is there a prohibition against working on Tisha B'Av?
This question pertains to regular work, not in hospitals or for saving lives.

Thank you very much,
Hila.

Answer

Greetings,

One should not work on the night of Tisha B'Av (Mishnah Berurah Siman Tisha, S.K. 53), and according to the opinion of Rabbi Ovadia Yosef zt"l, it is permissible (Chazon Ovadia Arba Ta'anit, page 318).

On Tisha B'Av itself—one should not work until noon (see Shulchan Aruch and Rema there, paragraph 22), and even afterward, there is no sign of blessing in that money (Shulchan Aruch there, paragraph 24, and Mishnah Berurah there).

Blessings,

Hillel Meirs
