Is there a prohibition against lending eggs to a neighbor?

AA

Question

I have heard a belief that it is forbidden to lend eggs to a neighbor, and if one does, they must be returned. My sister-in-law lent eggs to her neighbor several times, and the neighbor has not returned them. She is quite worried about this. My question is whether this belief has a source in Judaism or if it is merely a superstition.

Answer

Shalom u'vracha.

This is a superstition. When returning eggs, one must ensure that the eggs are returned in the same size as the ones borrowed, and not larger eggs, as that would raise a question of interest. It is also permissible to return larger eggs but with a stipulation that the size is a gift.

Best of luck - Menashe Yisrael.
