If I get up before dawn, when should I wash my hands?

AA

Question

Shalom Rav, if I get up at 4:30 before dawn, should I wash my hands? Or should I wait until after dawn? And if I should wash my hands, should it be with a blessing or without one? If so, when should I recite it with a blessing, and when without?

Answer

Shalom Rav,

In such a case, you should wash your hands immediately after you get up - with a blessing, and when dawn arrives you should wash your hands a second time - without a blessing.

Sources: See Shulchan Aruch and Rema (siman 4, seif 14), Mishnah Berurah there, and Halacha Berurah (seif 46).

With blessings,

Hillel Meirs
