Was Samson the Hero Born Without Legs?

AA

Question

In which Gemara or aggadah is it related that Samson the hero was born without legs?

Thank you

Answer

Shalom uvrakhah,

Samson was born healthy with both legs, but in his final captivity among the Philistines he was lame, and thus it is stated in the Gemara (Sotah 10a) that Samson was lame in both his legs, as it is said (Bereishit 49:17), "Shfifon alay orach."

However, there are differing opinions among the commentators as to whether lame means one who has no legs at all, or whether it refers to one whose gait sways from side to side.

With blessing,

Hillel Meirs
