Is it permitted for a woman who is in the seven days of mourning to cook food for her children?

AA

Question

Hello, my mother is in mourning during the seven days. Can she cook food at home for her children and for everyone in the house?

Thank you!

Answer

Hello,

It is permitted for your mother, may she live and be well, to bake and cook for her children and all the members of her household.

Sources: The Shulchan Aruch, Yoreh Deah (siman 387, seif 22), writes that it is permitted for a woman to bake and cook during her mourning period, and the Rema added: everything she needs, but what she does not need is forbidden. The Aruch HaShulchan (there, seif 32) wrote that it is also permitted for her to bake and cook everything needed by the members of her household. This is also the ruling in Chazon Ovadia, Mourning, part 2 (page 138).
