Repairing the Sin of Ejection of Semen

AA

Question

Hello and blessings,

I want to repair the flaw in the covenant, how can I rectify this sin? I am confused because there are many statements, and each one is different. What can be done, and is it possible to rectify this severe sin?

 Thank you very much.

Answer

Hello,

First, you must return with complete repentance for the sin, which includes remorse for the sin, verbal confession (as explained below), and a resolve for the future never to return to this sin ever again (Rambam, Laws of Repentance, Chapter 2, Law 2). Verbal confession means you should say, "Please, Hashem, I have sinned, I have transgressed, I have acted this way, and now I am remorseful and ashamed of my actions, and I will never again return to this behavior" (Rambam, ibid, Chapter 1, Law 1). In order for the rectification to be complete, you should take upon yourself, without a vow, to increase your Torah study each day—more than you were used to until now.

Sources: Refer to the Tanya (Iggeret HaTeshuvah, Chapter 9) which states that since the flaw in the covenant through emission of semen is serious, it affects the mind; thus, its correction is to engage in Torah, which emerges from wisdom. This is illustrated in the teaching of the Tanna of the school of Elijah (which I could not find at this moment, but it can be found in Vayikra Rabbah, Chapter 25, Section 1) that if a person has sinned and is liable to death, what should he do to live? If he was accustomed to read one page, he should read two pages; if he was accustomed to review one chapter, he should review two chapters; and this is like the parable of a broken rope that is tied again and becomes doubled and reinforced where the knot is. And thus it is in the rope of his inheritance, etc. In addition, see the Responsa of Maharam Shick, Part 1 (end of Section 58) which proves from the Zohar (Ruth, Section 12) that repentance for this sin is effective when combined with Torah study, and from this it is evident that what is written in the Zohar (Parashat Vayechi) that repentance is not effective for this sin means it is so without Torah study. See also there, Part 3 (in the index, Section 258, commentary) where it is mentioned that later he found in Rashi in the book of Yehezkel (Chapter 23, Verse 37 in the gloss) that it is also explicitly stated so. Furthermore, it is clarified in the Responsa of Yabia Omer, Part 1 (Part of Yoreh De'ah, Section 14, Section 14) and in his book Hazon Ovadiyah for the Days of Awe (page 257). Also see the book Keter Rosh (Section 173) in the name of the Gaon of Vilna, Aglai Tal (in the introduction, commentary), Mishnah Berurah (Section 566, Law 3), and what is written regarding this in the Responsa of Aderet Tiferet, Part 3 (Section 56). Also see the Responsa of Igrot Moshe, Part Orach Chaim, Part 4 (Section 116) and Part 6 (Section 40) regarding the order of repentance for the sin of illicit relations, specifically for the handling of the matter.

Best wishes,

Hillel Meirs.
