Is a convert who later does not observe mitzvot still Jewish in every respect? And what is the status of her marriage to a Jew after conversion?

AA

Question

Is a convert who went through conversion through the Rabbinate and completed the entire process, and then does not keep Shabbat, still a convert, or has she returned to being a gentile? What is the status of marriages to an Israelite that were performed after the conversion; are they valid? In a case where the conversion is not valid, can she do teshuvah, or is she required to convert again?

Answer

Greetings and blessings,

A female convert who, at the time of conversion, did not intend to accept the yoke of mitzvot, and it was evident to everyone that she did not intend to observe mitzvot, is not a convert at all.

However, one who intended to observe mitzvot at the time of conversion and later backtracked is Jewish in every respect.

If the conversion is not valid, certainly she can convert again and merit to be a proper daughter of Israel.

With blessings,

Binyamin Shmueli
