Does a tallit require genizah?

AA

Question

Hello, Rabbi, may a tallit be thrown in the trash?

Thank you very much, Rabbi

Answer

Hello,

A tallit whose tzitzit are still attached may not be thrown into the garbage, even if it is wrapped in a plastic bag or the like. Rather, it should be placed in one’s home or in a deserted place in a discreet location, and it will decay on its own. One who is stringent and places it in genizah will be blessed.

However, a tallit from which the tzitzit have been removed may be thrown into the garbage if it is tied up inside a plastic bag or the like.

Sources: See Orach Chaim (siman 21, seifim 1-2), Mishnah Berurah, and Piskei Teshuvot there.

With blessings,

Hillel Meirs
