What Blessing Is Recited on Schnitzel?

AA

Question

What blessing is recited on mixed foods such as rice with vegetables or schnitzel (with bread crumbs)? HaMotzi, Shehakol nihyeh bidvaro, or Borei minei mezonot?

Thank you very much

Answer

Greetings,

1. If rice makes up the majority, it is considered the primary food, and one recites only mezonot (see Chazon Ovadia, Berachot, page 285, and Halacha Berurah, siman 212, seif 6).

2. Regarding schnitzel - if the bread crumbs are very few, in a way that it is evident they were added only so that it would not stick to the pan - one recites shehakol. But if there is a substantial amount of bread crumbs in a way that it is evident that they were added also in order to give taste - one recites mezonot (see Halacha Berurah, siman 208, seif 12, and in Biyur Halacha there, note 8, it states that his father, Maran Rishon LeTzion HaGaon Rabbi Ovadia Yosef, of blessed memory, agreed with him).

With blessings,

Hillel Meirs
