Different Appearance
Question
Why are human beings born looking different from one another? Is there a reason for this, and does it hint at something about a person?
Answer
Shalom u'vracha, Yes.
Our Sages said: As their faces are not alike, so their minds are not alike (Berachot 58b). Regarding Moshe Rabbeinu, it is said: Appoint for them a leader who will bear each and every one according to his own understanding. Hashem created human beings with different faces, in order that we should recognize that each person is a unique creation, with a character and opinions that belong to him alone. Just as we accept the fact that his face is different from ours, so too we must accept the fact that his opinions are different from ours. In addition, there is significance to the fact that each person is created uniquely in his appearance and character, because in this way each person completes a unique tikkun of his soul in the world - something that no other soul can complete in his place.
