When Is a Brit Milah Performed for a Baby Born on Shabbat by Cesarean Section?

AA

Question

Shalom rav,
Baruch Hashem, this morning (Shabbat) I gave birth to my firstborn son. For one reason or another, I had to undergo a cesarean section. My question is: since I understood that this case does not override Shabbat, when should we perform the brit? Is it on the day after the eighth day, or may it be done on any other date at our discretion (I mean within a few days, of course)?
I would appreciate a prompt answer. Thank you.

Answer

Good week,

Indeed, one born by cesarean section has a brit milah that does not override Shabbat, and therefore it should be performed on Sunday, and it is forbidden to delay it to another day.

Sources: This is stated in Shulchan Aruch, Yoreh Deah (section 266, paragraph 10), that for one born by cesarean section, his circumcision does not override Shabbat.

And that it is forbidden to delay his circumcision beyond Sunday, even though it is already postponed, see Rama, Yoreh Deah (section 261), and responsa Noda B'Yehuda, second edition (Yoreh Deah section 166), and responsa Yabia Omer, part 5 (Yoreh Deah section 23, subsection 2), and part 11 (Yoreh Deah section 24).

With blessings of Mazal Tov,

Hillel Meirs
